What happened, how far it goes, and what proper repair looks like.

After the collision, the grounding, the storm, the fire, the lightning strike. An independent record of the damage, built for the claim and the repair that follow.

About this survey

A damage survey assesses the extent of damage following a collision, grounding, storm, fire, flooding, lightning strike or other marine casualty. Its purpose is to document the damage, identify affected systems and structural components, and provide an independent assessment.

Each inspection determines the nature and extent of damage, identifies related safety concerns and documents conditions with detailed notes and photographs. Moisture testing, thermal imaging and ultrasonic thickness testing are used where they assist in evaluating structural damage.

What a typical damage survey may include

  • Structural damage assessment
  • Hull, deck and superstructure inspection
  • Mechanical and propulsion system evaluation
  • Electrical system inspection
  • Steering and running gear assessment
  • Moisture testing where appropriate
  • Thermal imaging when beneficial
  • Ultrasonic thickness testing (steel/aluminum), when applicable
  • Detailed photographic documentation
  • Apparent cause of the damage, when determinable
  • Repair recommendations
  • Progressive repair inspections (on request)
  • Final repair completion inspection (on request)
48 hrs

Most reports land in 48 hours. Seventy-two at the outside. The surveyor who did the inspection writes the report, usually the same night.

Straight answers

Can you tell what caused the damage?

Often, yes, and it matters: a claim can turn on whether the damage came from one incident or from something that had been going wrong for a long time. Where the evidence will not support one answer, the report says so instead of guessing.

Can you follow the repair through?

Yes, on request. It is the same surveyor throughout, so the file that opened the claim is the file that closes it.

Who is the report written for?

Owners with a claim to file, and the insurers, attorneys and repair facilities who need an independent account of what happened and how far it goes.
