What the underwriter needs, in the form they expect.

Binding, renewing or asked for an updated survey? An insurance survey answers the two questions a carrier asks: what condition the vessel is in, and what it is worth.

About this survey

Marine insurance companies commonly require a survey before issuing or renewing a policy, particularly on older or higher-value vessels. An insurance survey establishes current condition together with an independent opinion of Fair Market Value and Replacement Cost.

The inspection covers structure, machinery, electrical systems, plumbing, fuel systems, navigation and safety equipment, with emphasis on condition, maintenance and overall seaworthiness. Sea trials, haul-out inspections, moisture testing, thermal imaging and ultrasonic thickness testing are incorporated where appropriate.

What a typical insurance survey may include

  • Structural inspection of hull, deck and superstructure
  • Machinery and propulsion systems
  • Electrical systems (AC & DC)
  • Plumbing, fuel and sanitation systems
  • Navigation and safety equipment
  • Seaworthiness and maintenance assessment
  • Fair Market Value opinion
  • Replacement Cost opinion
  • Moisture, thermal and ultrasonic testing where appropriate
48 hrs

Most reports land in 48 hours. Seventy-two at the outside. The surveyor who did the inspection writes the report, usually the same night.

Straight answers

My insurer asked for a “C&V”: is that this?

Yes. An insurance survey is a condition and valuation survey prepared for underwriting: the same document under a different name.

Will the survey be accepted?

Our principal surveyor is NAMS-CMS certified, the certification marine insurers and lenders accept, and that standing is publicly checkable in the NAMS member register. Check his listing ↗

Does the boat have to come out of the water?

Often, yes. If the boat is already coming out for bottom paint or other yard work, booking the survey for the same haul-out saves paying for the lift twice.
